Following today's discussion, I had some updates for the drawing arrangement.

I've changed the scale of each drawing according to the profile grid.

I've taken drawing at very low position away.

And sorry Jonathan since I don't think the perspective way to put drawings will work also it will be a bit strange when look at them from the front, I would still prefer to put drawings in a normal way.

Here is a question for Antoine and Royce. Is that possible to change you two's model position so that all Antoine's drawings can be put together as showed in Version 2? Otherwise I'll use Version 1.

Exhibition Drawing Arrangement

This is the newest version of drawing arrangement. Basically I've tried to move relavent drawings to each model. The top line of drawings is aligned with the top of profile. Lables will be located beside each drawing.

Small prints at the corner position will be decided later(if you have any more good renderings/photos/diagrams please send me ASAP). Angle of drawings will be updated later as well.

We finally decide to print on 160g paper. And we've tried to mount drawings on cheap brown card board as well as white foam board. Samples will be showed in Sunday's meeting.

In terms of hanging small prints, I'll make 2 versions with fish wires. Also can be seen on Sunday.

Everyone's foil model will be put near their fragment to have a better connected story.

the wall area(especially corner) will have denser profile than near the diagonal border

01- left to right :view from court yard into back wall of designer entrance then move to stair court of designer studio and finally end up with wall treatment. It shows between perforating quality from archer st glimpes into the courtyard and also the glimpse from couryard into the stairs up to show spaces. while the solid wall treatment contain spacing quality but keep privacy of the studios.

02&03- entrance from rupert st. the stairs are the entrance for models while it is hidden by introduce perforating wall at the entrance of the bar on the right. and i will apply rough metal on the stairs and mirrored metal on the bar entrance to extreme the case. And larger spacing on the 1st floor of the make-up area to promote people from street to move closer to see more.

04- i like this interal view but it is not showing what i want it to show at the moment but i am judge the walls to make it work. mainly wanna show the perforating wall is hiding the dressing room back of it but visually make it to be continued with shared wall of the bar. and on this view it is suposed to show the glimpse from the bar(at the left) as well while it is shown as solid as the moment.

05-this angle shows the perforating quality between the bar and the catwalk and it will be best if i can show how the dressing room is hidden while it is stopped on the right edge of the paper..

looing from rupert street (taking some walls off). the right end is the entrance to the bar which motivates ppl moving in and at the same time to hide the stairs to the make-up rooms on its left.

actually when i am doing this model i realised i need both options i posted earlier, the rectangular and triangular... because they are doing different things. not very happy about entrance from archer st which is at the top, i am going to refine it later.

there are two options for the perforating wall. i like the first one which bring two quality inside and outside. i am not putting material to render now but the different effect will be more extreme after i render it with metal. at the moment the largest spacing is 900mm tough it lookes quite closed here. more perforating quality can be seen with different angle, i am showing this angle because i can only get the lighting correctly like this. I am building up the wall by rhino now so we can discuss the whole model tomorrow. And I am thinking to 3d print these element and then wrap it with aluminum sheet. what do you think?

this is for the 2d pattern. and some parts of the pattern are wall treatment and some are perforated wall as i sketched in the last post. Would it be better if i extrude the perforated wall to the right side of the panel and show then as wired frames as 3d surfaces?

endgame 06 - perception views - draft

1. view from carnaby/ beak street intersection... the bentley enters the building

(better quality render of facade and portcullis that also incorporates the visible interior brick walls will replace this)

2. view from the lobby: maurice ascends the stairs

(needs to be re-rendered with internal portcullis, materials and lighting)

3. Client interfacing within executive bar

(I used the 3d print model for the perforations in this view and the next hence they are overscaled and need to be replaced by actual bricks in the final render)

4. the sweatshop works on...

(again needs to be rendered with actual bricks along this surface and have proper figures photoshopped in)

all these views are just a draft to give a sense of what I would like to capture in the final sequence but please let me know whether any of them need to be modified further than what I have aforementioned / if they are not effective yet.

Im currently editing (01) strategic overview and (02) becoming habitat. I have also finished the coded sectional model to be printed tomorrow which hopefully will not collapse despite the cantilevers and perforate walls. Will bring all drafts of drawings printed to scale on tuesday.

i was trying to pattern the space to bring movement and direction to the programs. But i think i can not show all the patterns once when they are on different levels and overlapped on each other, but for some parts it does becoming interesting such as the top right corner. So would you think i should extrude different levels apart like iso drawing and show the patterns on different levels separately or i should just show the over all effect which make the back faces absent? also, because the b/w pattern is very strong, it is kinds of making some lines to be disappeared, would it be ok? This is the second drawing for becoming habitat. I have tried the version where the facades are not exploded, but it than becomes more difficult to read, also I think it's good if I can show some secondery infomartion (section), the primary being the extension of the existing, the new offered spaces (grey tone). The editing is not finished but just need some feedbacks? I can blog the one with facades attached if needed. Thanks.

First test for an exterior view using just lines and the existing as pictures. I quite like how it looks but still not convice on the edge of new/extisting. Will try to apply a tone or texture to that specific adjacency. What do you think?

From a certain perspective while walking towards the cafe the viewer will see the pattern create this sense of a distant space. The tables and chairs are blocking the pedestrians view of the floor thus enhancing the effect of a space due to the fact that there is no horizontal surface visible to compare the pattern with.

The shade is linked to the floor at a certain point to confuse the pedestrians understanding of the width of the entrance.

A coincidental pattern is projected on the shade and the wall perpendicular to the cafe to unify the two seperate surfaces.

Following the previous post for my section, I cut again through the stair.

Below are several views that I thought good. I felt a bit hard to choose the best for my section drawing.

1. Showing the route going up to 2nd floor mainly. I can explain my idea to let people walk through inside profile space. (This is the reason why I didn't connect 2 levels of profile as one).I can also describe more activities happened on the wide stairs.
2. Same cut as the first one but viewing more from right front. Stronger sense of perspective view. The space for car to go at ground floor is clearer(it's the widest way between 2 profiles in the middle).

3.Cut from the other side to show the route connects Peter St. and Lexington St. This route goes up to 1st floor first to create a bridge to let car go through and then down back to ground floor.I think the horizontal void cutting pattern is better at this side and we can see a bit of the entrance from lexington side(right in the image). But the effect of the stair and the route is not as strong as the other two.

This is the draft version of my section drawing.

Is this view ok? Shall I zoom in more to the profiles? And any more detail should I add?

Since the curve of the circle is been distorted so much when I transfer my rhino file to illustrator, I sort of decide to make this drawing via laser cut machine with 1mm card board rather than print it out on paper. I can divide the drawing into several layers by spatial order, laser cut each and then assemble them together to achieve a raised effect.

Black Box Model

Top one is the way how I will apply void to the Black Box.

The horizontal void cut for current model is following some ring shapes,I've tried to cut the black box following the same shape(as showed on top left). However the black box became too open that what's inside doesn't achieve as something mystery. Finally I decided only have too quite small cuts for the top surface, just to bring a bit light to the inside without showing too many structures.

The second image shows what people can see from each holes at 4 sides of the box. There are totally 8 viewing points --- 3 each at front/back and 1 each at sides. The height is been set up to the eye level which is about 1.5m from floor.

The top one is a development from the bottom one to bring back the element of going from one side and shifting to another within the shop. Where ive highlighted blue (underneath the landing) on the 2nd drawing could be an entrance to the open kitchen where the Patisserie staffs could get in and out. And the strips do not go right up to the ceiling but merge into one surface.

I think i quite like how there could be the entrance underneath the stairs but may be it does look better when the strips continue right up to the ceiling (bottom one) . And may be add more strips to the landing part so the whole form looks more connected. Pls let me know what you think of the revised design.

Layering, Layering and Layering...

Here is a update of the proposal, i'm currently stackbounding the layers. Taking quite a long but hopefully will be done for tmr's tutorial. Once it will be done I will built some models. Since I would like the 1/200 to be a nice ending model (not a study one), i think i will do portion of the site at a 1/100 scale, as studies to improve after the 1/200. So the idea for friday would be to have several models and the strategic drawing and section far advanced. What do you think?

i did a quick collage of how the event users and existing users are interacted. the walls all own different properties(inspired from my pattern and material studies). it is just for make my head running and give a overall image of the situation for TS discussing. I am currently working on one typical wall and section for dimensions/material/fitting. and i am not very happy with where i place the mirror (i am thinking of applying mirror on sloped top of the catwalk so the inside images can be transfered outside to the courtyard but having problem of working out the fitting) and more importantly, i am a bit stuck with the roof for carwalk,,,,but think of finishing a physical sketch model after tomorrow then hopefully i will be more clear.

Initial rendering of the external view

This is an initial rendering for the external view from Peter Street, which is the entrance to my passage way. I finally plan to keep the facade frame and the structure columns of the existing car park. I think the idea to show the contrast between the old and new is very interesting as discussed in the previous crits.
The material of the perforate panels is been set up as steel metal, the entrance is kind of hidden by the pattern applied.

At different perspectives the pattern changes. I tried to allow the pattern to create an inviting entrance at one point and when looked at perpendicularly the pattern creates this central focus point and draws people towards the interior to follow this pattern.

this diagram shows the break through the street surface and the interaction with existing programs. i am integrate 3 different levels vertically: the courtyard-1.5m below building level, which forms the open theatre with glimpse into the bridge and direct view/ access with the bar, and large stairs(sitting)/ green space forms levels and distance to keep privacy between residential wall and ppl in the court yard. at the ground floor level0,0m, the entrance from archer st for fashion events with direct view into courtyard to transfer inside out. and from rupert st, the bar has been opened up to the courtyard allow movement through. and private entrance for models is next to the bar entrance and stairs up into main area. at the 1st floor level(3.0m), i am dealing with glimpse from street and bar into the make-up area. and hidden access from the bar to the auditorium at the back of vip seats. the bridge is running from lower starting from rupert street side and higher into the existing archer st. studio,

dazzle entrance idea#1

I adapted the dazzle pattern onto the entrance to create certain effects of the space within the entrance. When looking perpendicularly at the entrance we are drawn into this black central space. Also I played with distorting the perspective and the pattern is projected through the interior space behind the entrance which I find to be quite interesting and has some potential to be developed.
This is just a test and I will be designing a much more effective dazzle pattern on the three entrances of the building and maybe some of the interior spaces of the block.

the initial skin is a series of brick facets with openings (marked in blue) between facets to let light inside
in elevation, the facets peel away to create the openings much in the same way as the interior quetta bond peels away to create an intermediate space between the two layers of the wall

viewed frontally from carnaby street, one doesn't see the openings in the façade, only the facets that mask the perception of depth

viewed obliquely along beak street, the façade begins to open up and the depth of different facets can be understood (or not depending on the surface grain of the brick pattern for each facet) and the gaps between facets begin to be understood creating a more changeable experience of the surface like some of my foil models.

having built this model, I am starting to understand better the issues discussed at my tutorial of how the skin shouldn't be one element pasted onto the building but rather something that shifts between floors and overlaps to bring some of the interior vocabulary of the 'intermediate space' towards the façade.

My next step will be to model this new façade in 3d but do you think it is worth building another paper physical model or rather go back to exploring in section how the new façade can interact with the adjacent spaces and then make some decisions after that?

I think once I model the new façade in 3d and am happier with the nature of the spaces behind it, I could start to think about the brick pattern grain and how that can be unwrapped and rewrapped onto the façade - similar to the process used when making my foil models?

There are 4 blue layers representing each level of entrances in the department store, each entrance being attached to a street and its topography. Ambiguous Surfaces / Test 01

Some sketches of surface behaviours for smith court's entrance. Using two surfaces qualities (one is extension of existing (adaptive), the other belongs to department store). They both act as volumes/mass while one is only a huge void conducting light to the basement and existing spaces. They also overlap as they are continuous further behind one another, giving some signs of path and mouvement to users.

These are quite quick to do so i'll do them for all entrances on site (5) and then the inside of the court. So I can have a overview of every part of the site, so I can do Drawing n°1 and continue on a more specific location (other drawings).

The programs within the block have been finalised. My next step is to create collage/ drawings of how the space is used by the programs.

The new block extends from Berwick Street's side all the way to Poland Street (where an amazing BBQ Ribs place is : Bodeans).
The Block can be accessed from Berwick and Noel Street. The entrance to the 'square' is more welcoming on Noel Street's side. The entrance from Berwick Street is narrow and is shared with the Gentleman's Club/ Pub.
The Gentlman's club entrance is only most noticible when pedestrians are walking towards Soho.
Berwick Street has the path to access the programs on the floors above ground.

Ground Floor> Cafe, restaurant, Fashion boutiques, small grass area, XXX shop,
Gentlemen's Club, Bookstore.
1st Floor> Office, Loungs/ Nightclub.
2nd Floor> ...nothing...
3rd Floor> Residential flats (entrance), playground for kids, Market stalls,
Kindergarten school (entrance).
4th Floor> Kindergarten School.

Obviously the pavement and the streets are publicly accessible but there are some parts of the Block which are not for pedestrians/ tourists flowing from Oxford street. Some programs stop the continuity of the pavement. This is achieved by the change in surfaces from one space to another (will be shown in collages).

The Block has been put into the exhisting block. The buildings affecting the new Block were removed or changed in a way to achieve the sense of being 'outside' when inside the block.

In this initial study I have arranged the volumes that would be occupied by Maurice Saatchi within the building. A wireframe of the floorplates (2.8m high on avg) for the remainder of program can be seen against these volumes. All volumes occupied by Maurice are 4.2m high with the exception of where they conform to the heights that the façade stipulates.

My next step is to try and incorporate the geometry generated by my brick patterns as a mediator between these two worlds and then to cut sections to elaborate on how they relate to one another.

I'm trying to find disruptive fascets for the skin of building by applying the anamorphic perspective. the main tool for making space is dividing and connecting. each room block is divided having void space between others and corridor will connect it. and this void let people glimpse through hotel inside and the inner surface would be seen ordinary wall (brick or stone.. ). the courtyard locate diagonally to maximize the sense of perspective.

initial plan was too free form was drawn by effects on small part. grid system leaded to more effective layout to put inside block beyond outter block.

the void between outer block will be connect with slightly set backed glazing too to emphasis the facets.

i'm still seeking...

what is comfort?

is the sense of belonging able to be dealt with some communal solution?

how this hotel can be perceived as a nesting and habitat of camouflage for people.

These were some sectional studies from Merlin Eayrs (Inter 6 2007-8) for a brothel/ kindergarten project in Kings Cross. Sketches of different sytem the plan of the building can work with the 2 programs (Theatre backstage/Patisserie). Similarly to the pattern of mine, each program has its own distinct nature but sometimes the boundary overlaps and one program shifts into another. I am trying to work out the best use and function but considering the overall experience of the space as well so the shop floor will be a double space with this form (made from 2 modules, same shape as the perforation, connecting the floor) So the idea of the constant shifts between the 2 apply to botht the plan and the section. From here i will be able to point out the different sizes of perforation needed for different use and work more on the connection between the floors so that the building doesnt just become screens of perforation. And how the skin on the facade will work with the program inside.

This was an initial study, using different sizes of perforation to determine public and private area. (It shows how the floors could be link together by this continuous "screen" different colours show public/private, which can shift or overlap each other.

Thanks for the Lavete post. Remember the FOA project I mentioned earlier? It's called Meydan – Umraniye Retail Complex & Multiplex . It reminds me of our trip to Yokohama where landscape merges with architecture anf infrasture. From a distance, the place looks like a dessert or a flood of red brick but it is actually earth-coloured tiles!It is also a nice public square too! At another level, your shibuya scramble and erosion of public and commercial space comes to mind!

It talks a bit about how it was manufactured and how the architect created these nurbs surfaces digitally.

I think this quote from the article is pretty relevant to the discussion today about what is solid and what is void:

"The project embodies opposites; simple yet complex, solid yet apparently kinetic, sculptural though not monolithic. The voids between the surfaces become as essential as the form and structure itself. Revealing the physical presence of the void creates maximum visual input with minimum means."

If you do decide to use this material, I read somewhere that there is a publication coming out called 'Corian: Super Surfaces' which talks about the potential of the material.

Sweaty Betty and The Beauty Lounge

Sweaty Betty and the Beauty Lounge are the 2 programs that I will be refurbishing for my final Project. Sweaty Betty is a boutique store in which health and beauty products are sold, whereas the beauty lounge is an area for relaxation treatment . Therefore I would like to create a passageway in which I will connect the two programs together through the passageway of Kingly Court whilst maintaining public access.

My focus will be:

A hidden entry of the passageway viewing from Upper John's Street which will be visible along Beak Street.

Hidden spaces create connections between the two programs and also creating interior layout of the two stores.

Create a continuity between the interior and exterior of the two stores and part of the passageway towards kingly court.

To show visibility of existing facade from the view point of Upper John's Street and Beak Street.

Study of existing exterior and interior circulation of the two programs. The only way to access 1st, 2nd and 2nd floor of Sweaty Betty Building is by the entrance inside the passageway. This will be useful in order to create a controlled passageway using my foil model techniques.

Show connections- Make clear diagrams that show the abstract and real relations between programmes, solid, voids, layers, levels, time relations, tectonic elements, overlaps........ note 1 colour only!

Show voids- show the absence of something so that you can reveal the space in between and its relation to other elements/ volumes.4 colours but working together to create a series of interrelated studies.

Multipurpose Sports complex- no.mad (Eduardo Arroyo)

Develop models that demonstrate abstract relations between your pattern, surfaces and the spaces created in between. Make the project do more than simply reiterate earlier dazzle ideas- speculate more about what it does in your own project, transforming spaces and our perception of them. studies to arrange them back to order.
